Solicitors provides a range of legal advice and support to clients, either individuals or organisations. They take instructions from clients and advise them on any appropriate course of legal action.

Legal practices vary in the type of work they undertake. This is often determined by the practice size and specialisations of partners, and leads to their focusing on specific areas of law and markets they choose to serve. 'High street firms' usually deal with the needs of their local community and so offer a range of suitable services such as litigation, legal aid work, landlord and tenant arrangements, property conveyancing, wills and probate, and matrimonial.

Both commercial and non-commercial solicitors often work in a particular specialist area but all will, to some extent, be involved in:

  • meeting potential clients for interview to establish whether they can provide the service required, and to determine the first steps in advising and supporting a new client.
  • informing clients about costs and fees of proposed services.
  • advising clients on legal matters.
  • taking instructions from clients.
  • conducting research and analysing information such as legal documents, statements, and reports.
  • maintaining correspondence with clients and solicitors representing other parties involved in any legal matter or action.
  • helping clients select a Barrister where necessary, and engaging, liaising with and instructing Barristers where necessary.
  • conducting meetings with other parties involved in any legal matter or action.
  • management of cases within the practice.
  • overseeing administration of legal aid funding.
  • preparing papers for cases (e.g. for courts).
  • assessing damages and advising clients.
  • attending court either to support a Barrister in higher courts, or to represent clients in the lower courts.
  • overseeing administration such as billing clients.
